The Best Office Workplace Weight Loss Challenge Ideas

One could argue that there is no better place to pick up bad habits than working in an office. As someone who used to work in the finance department, it would be hard for me to disagree. I would just look around and could spot a handful of bad habits.

Whether it be sitting down all day, a coworker bringing in a box of doughnuts for breakfast, or just the stress that we all deal with on a daily basis. These are all poor habits that make living a healthy lifestyle almost impossible.

So it’s important to take it upon yourself to find ways to make the workplace a more healthier place to be. A good way to do that is with challenges. So below are some office workplace weight loss challenge ideas to help better your health.

It’s also a chance for you to have fun at work with the coworkers, since we know that is not always the case.

Office Wagers

We live in a society where people love making bets when it comes to things they care about most. So if you’re looking for a way to get people at the office more serious about their health, try starting an office wager.

Make a Weight Loss “Bet” Today!

The same way there are office pools when it comes to sports, you could organize it the same way. Instead of picking which team will win a game, you could just choose which person will lose the most weight in a certain period of time.

You could even bring in a scale with a board that tracks the progress of each person that is participating in the challenge. This makes losing weight fun and and interactive.

Office Team Challenge

Research has shown that more people have success losing weight as a team, as opposed to trying to lose weight individually. Whether you believe that to be true or not, here are a few reasons why this may be the case:

  • Held accountable by others on your team to perform
  • Support to help you get through the tough times
  • Makes losing weight fun and exciting
  • Get to be social and meet new people

These are just some of the reasons why forming a team at the office can be effective for weight loss.

Sign Up. Join a Team. Lose Weight. Win up to $10,000

You could even form teams within departments. Where each each department competes to see who can lose the most amount of weight as a team. Whoever wins, the departments who lost has to buy lunch for the department who won.

You’ll be amazed at how motivating a competition like this can be when trying to lose weight. Whatever you do, just make sure to always have fun with it.

Office Step Challenge

Being inside an office, more than likely you will see people sitting down with very poor posture. And if you are someone that is looking to lose weight, then clearly this isn’t going to help get the job done.

So what you can do is organize a step challenge at work. Gather a bunch of coworkers and compete to see who can take the most amount of steps in a given week. A great time to get some steps in is during lunch break.

After you have finished eating your lunch, you can take 20-30 minutes to go for a nice walk. Not only is this a good time to hang out and be social with friends, but also destress from the daily grind at work.

Office Food Challenge

I can remember working in an office, it was either someone’s birthday, or there was some company function going on. So you already know that means there were tons of opportunities to eat some really unhealthy foods.

So it’s important to find ways to make sure that you are eating healthy throughout the week. What you could also do is, whoever you like to hangout with during lunch, challenge yourselves to eat a healthy meal for lunch everyday together.

Whether you bring your own lunch from home, or like to go out, hold each other accountable when it comes to the foods you eat.

Hello! I love your article and will plan on showing this to my co-workers. I have worked in an office in a cubicle for years and when I do not have a plan I will get off track and just start stress eating at my desk. This has caused a lot of fluctuation of my weight over the years. The company I work for just built a beautiful gym for us and I have been using it. I am going to send this to the gals I am working out with and get some great challenges going! Thanks

Hi Ashley…I’ve worked in an office myself, and although stress eating was never an issue, the temptation to eat unhealthy was. So I can definitely understand you situation. I am happy to hear that a gym was provided for you all to at least get in a workout during you break or after even. Thanks for commenting.

Hey Ralph,
Great article, thanks for posting. I totally agree with you, there are a multitudes of bad habits you can pick up in an office environment. I work close to our accounting department and I kid you not, there are always a plethora of interesting cookies and candies available for anyone who passes by. Fortunately we also partner with a company that provides incentive for healthy activity. We just had an office team challenge for which team could get the most steps in a month – this to me is the way to do it. Get together with a bunch of work buds to get fitter quicker. Thanks for sharing! Mat A.

Getting in shape is always more effective when you’re having fun. Especially since exercise can seem like such a chore for many. In regards to including a prize, why not? Research has shown that giving incentives is a great way to get results. It seems to bring out the competitor in everyone. Thanks for commenting!
