Noom Coach vs Weight Watchers – Which Is Better?

Which Program Gets You The Best Results?

Trying to decide which weight loss program can be hassle. Not knowing if it will be the program that finally gets you the results you’re looking for can make you hesitant to try.

Two weight loss programs I plan on talking about in this article, both offer effective ways to help you lose weight. Noom Coach vs Weight Watchers. But which one would work best for you?

To answer that question, you first have to understand your habits when it comes to diet and exercise. Then after you figure that out, it’s important to compare each program based on those habits.

Below I compare each program and break down what makes each program different. Because although we know both are geared to helping you lose weight, each program offers a different way in which they go about doing that.

Key Differences Between Noom and Weight Watchers

Maybe one of the biggest differences between both weight loss programs is the name recognition. Noom was founded in 2008, and Weight Watchers started in 1963. So weight watchers no doubt has the experience when it comes to helping people lose weight.

Although this is the case, I wouldn’t yet count out Noom as they are nicely building a name for themselves in the health and fitness industry.

Another thing I would say makes each program unique when comparing the two, is the way they go about counting calories.

Weight watchers uses a point system that makes counting calories easy. Noom keeps it simple by using regular calories to help you understand what you are putting into your body.

Noom also makes the use of a personal coach a priority, whereas weight watchers has that as an option but at a much higher cost. I plan on getting into the cost of both programs later in this article.

Which Program Offers Better Support?

Noom – when it come to the noom coach weight loss program, regardless of which membership option you choose, you get access to your own personal coach.

For many, having this luxury can be the difference between getting results or not. Knowing that you have someone that is knowledgeable holding you accountable for your actions.

And the best part about having a personal coach is that you have access to this person 24/7. So whenever you have a question about a particular subject regarding your health, you have a coach available to you.

Weight Watchers – the kind of support you get from this program depends on which membership package you select. So you get to select which type of support would work best for you.

But when it comes to support, weight watchers provides a variety of options for your health and fitness needs. Not only can you get access to live group meetings and personal coaches, but you have this support 24/7.

So whether you’re looking for online support, or live support, you have the option to choose what best fits your needs.

Which Program Is Easier To Use?

Noom – everything you do when it comes to noom coach will pretty much be done with your phone. Logging your diet and exercise, reading articles, and most importantly, staying in touch with your personal coach.

Noom makes logging and tracking your data simple with their free app. Within their food database, you have access to a wide range of food choices with calorie amounts next to each of them.

The foods are also color coded so you have an idea of which foods are good for your weight loss goals or not. This will make managing your calorie intake much easier as you progress through the program.

Weight Watchers – just like the noom program, weight watchers allows you to access everything from your phone. It also has an app that even allows you to sync it to any fitness trackers you may have.

So you can track and log all your diet and fitness needs with ease. And if you choose the coaching package, you will get access to unlimited 1 on 1 phone sessions which can be a big help for those that need it.

If the online method isn’t enough to improve your weight loss success, weight watchers also has live group meetings you can attend where you speak to other members. This will allow you to discuss any obstacles you may be going through.

Tracking Calories

Noom – There’s nothing complicated when it comes to how Noom tracks your calories when logging your meals. Not only do they break the calories down by each meal you eat, but they also break it down by food item.

For those that struggle with what to make on a daily basis, noom also provides you with healthy recipes to make managing your diet simple.

Each food item or meal has the calorie amount, along with color labels to help keep you aware of the food choices you’re making whether healthy or not. Feedback is also provided based on your choices, which will hold you accountable along the way.

Weight Watchers – uses a “smartpoints” system where the goal is to accumulate the lowest amount of points as possible when consuming your meals. Each food item or meal is assigned points based on how healthy it is.

Healthy foods are assigned lower points, whereas unhealthy food items are higher. With their program, you are given a point budget. This budget is based on calories goals, so it’s important to stay under that dietary budget.

Weight watchers has made some adjustments to their system by calling it the freestyle program. There have been a lot of debate as to whether it is effective or not due to its zero points foods system. I plan on going into more detail about in in my quick review.

Advantage: Noom

Cost of Each Program

Noom – noom does offer a free app that allows you to log your meals and activity. But if you’re looking to get access to a personal coach, then there are 3 different subscriptions you can choose.

You can go with the monthly subscription that will cost you $59 per month. The 2 month subscription which costs $49.50 per month, and the 4 month subscription which costs $32.50 per month.

Regardless of which program you choose, you get access to a personal coach, unless you just go with the free option which is just using the app. Noom does offer a 14 day free trial for those looking to just try it out before fully committing to the program and figuring out if noom is worth it or not.

Weight Watchers – there are 3 different packages for you to choose from depending on the type of service you want. The available packages are:

  • Online Plus – $3.99/week
  • Meetings – $7.99/week
  • Coaching – $12.69/week

Each program is month to month, so you can cancel the program at anytime so that it doesn’t auto renew for the next month.

Having a variety of options lets you control the level of support you think you will need to be successful with your weight loss goals.

Advantage: Noom

Final Verdict: And The Winner Is…

…Noom Coach, but barely

Although weight watchers has the name recognition in the health industry, Noom has the personal touch that I think is important to one’s success.

What I mean by that is, regardless of which program you choose, noom gives you access to a personal coach. Yes weight watchers offers a package where you can get a personal coach, but it comes at much higher cost to the user.

Now weight watchers does have the option to attend weight loss meetings, but life can be so busy, that you may find yourself not having time to attend them.

That’s why it’s important to have that person guiding you from wherever you are, and noom has that at a very affordable price.

When it comes to technology, both programs give you the tools to be successful. But sometimes losing weight is more than just healthy eating and daily exercise. Sometimes it takes that person holding you accountable.

Which is why I feel that having a coach so important. And since both a personal trainer and nutritionist can be expensive, the noom weight loss program provides you with just that without have to break the bank for it.

Noom Coaching: A Quick Review

    • Informative articles to educate users about health
    • Challenges to make sure you maintain healthy habits
    • Daily food logging with feedback
    • Protected by HIPAA Laws
    • Calorie budget tracker
    • Built-in pedometer to track steps
    • In-app messaging with your coaching team
    • 14-Day Free Trial

    • Some of the tools provided can be found online for free
    • When it comes to weight loss, you’re not learning anything you didn’t know already

The noom weight loss program tries to take a different approach when it comes to helping people lose weight. Unlike most weight loss programs where they just try to help you manage diet and exercise, noom tries to go a bit deeper.

By helping you attack both the mental and emotional barriers that can slow down your progress. Sometimes it’s more than just what you’re eating, it can be your thoughts and unknown triggers that are causing you not to see results.

With the use of technology, noom provides you with the tools along with the help of a personal coach to help guide you to successful weight loss.

By helping you eliminate poor habits, and creating new ones for sustained long term success. Because like most diets, they may work while on it, but once you’re done with it, you’re back to where you started.

The goal of noom is to make sure the weight not only comes off, but stays off as well. And that can only be done by understanding what is causing you to struggle with your weight in the first place…Read Full Review.

Weight Watchers: A Quick Review

    • Can track food and activity with the weight watcher app
    • Uses a point system that makes counting calories very simple
    • Weekly group meetings available to members
    • Can connect with other members for support 24/7
    • Weekly private weigh ins for accountability
    • Dedicated coach along with 1 on 1 phone sessions
    • Get personalized action plans to fit your needs
    • Receive guides and printed materials

    • Many complaints about the changing of the point system to freestyle system
    • Concern over long term success of weight loss program
    • Some users have an issue with “Zero points food”

If counting calories seems like a tedious process for you, then weight watchers may be a program you want to try. They use a smartpoint tracker that makes counting your calories simpler.

Instead of using calories, they use points to identify if a particular food item is healthy for you or not. The way the system works is, you are given a budget on the amount of points you’re allowed to consume each day.

So the healthier the food you select, the lower the points you add to your budget. The more unhealthy your food item is, the more points that is added to your budget.

Many users found this system very effective and were pleased with the results. But weight watchers implemented a new program called zero food points where healthy food items added no points to your diet budget.

Many people found themselves gaining weight since this incentivised many to eat more, thus adding more calories. If you consume more calories than you burn, you will gain weight.

The solution to this is to do the opposite, which is burn more calories than you consume. This requires you to be active, which is what many people were failing to do when on this new program.

What Makes Online Weight Loss Programs So Effective

Even though losing weight is as simple as burning more calories, which comes from daily exercise and healthy eating, it’s the actual process that many struggle with.

Being part of an effective weight loss program can be exactly what you’re looking for. Not only do they understand what it takes to lose weight, but they provide for you a system that can help you form better habits.

Unlike fad diets where they try to restrict many foods that are good for you, rarely do they ever get to the root of your weight issues. So when you’re done with the diet, you find yourself gaining the weight right back.

This is because you haven’t trained yourself to both mentally and physically make better health choices. That’s why it’s important to find a weight loss program that focuses on providing you with long term results, not just short term.

Final Thoughts

When deciding which weight loss program will help get you the best results, it helps to understand what your strength and weaknesses are. For some, a diet change and being active is all that is needed.

But for others, it can be more than that. Understanding what barriers are holding you back from getting the results you’re looking for, takes a different kind of approach. Which is probably why I was intrigued by the Noom Coach weight loss program.

Attacking issues not only at the physical level, but at the mental is something many fail to realize about themselves. So it is something worth taking a look at if you’ve tried other weight loss programs without much success.

Weight watchers has been in the game a long time and understands what it takes to help you get results. So when deciding between Noom Coach vs Weight Watchers, know that both programs have the tools to increase your chance of success.

Getting results will come down to understanding your weakness, mental or physical, and choosing which program is best equipped to handle that.

Just started today. How long to begin seeing results?

Cheryl - December 14, 2019

I’ve been on WW for a year. I’m bored with it .. and I do not respect or trust Oprah who is the sponsor of the program. Her reputation is indicative of serious crimes against women. I’m looking for a change.

    Ralph - January 1, 2020

I always tell people that weight loss is about finding something that works for you. And Noom could be that programs that makes all the difference.

Cutie - September 4, 2019

Is your $99 price for the 2 months or 99 for each month?

    Ralph - September 6, 2019

Hi Cutie. That should be the total amount for the 2 months.

Jen - August 6, 2019

I appreciate a candid and honest review and yours is one. i joined WW early July and have had two setbacks (broken foot followed by broken arm) and activity is very difficult at the moment. I find WW pretty easy to do with the points system. I track everything, have lost my sweet cravings and am satisfied eating a fraction of what I was eating.

Results will not be known for quite a while for me. I totally understand why the foods are assigned the point totals they carry. I also know that every food contains calories despite being assigned a value of zero. Yes, fruit tastes great, but it’s loaded with sugar.

It would be nice if WW would do a little better job reminding people in some fashion not to forget those facts. I take personal accountability to realize nothing is free, not even intake of specific foods. My fear is that a good-intentioned concept could end up hurting people who are already obese, might be diabetic, dont take that personal accountability on themselves.

I want to give WW a fair chance, but fear this program may backfire on their reputation.

Doreen Levy - August 5, 2019

I love WW and have already become a lifetime member which means I get EVERYTHING including meetings, one on one coaching, the app, the whole shebang for Free!
Simple program, steady progress and great support.
Hands down WW is the winner for me.

    Ralph - August 6, 2019

Hi Doreen! I’m happy to hear that WW is working for you. When you find something that’s working for you, keep it going.

Nancy - June 4, 2019

I went to WW today with the intent of joining again. But I turned around at the front door and left. Reason being is I barely loose anything on their new program. I wanted the accountability, but not the program. Thank you for your article. Noom program sounds more like what I need! I will try the 14 day free trial to make sure. Thanks so much again!

    Ralph - June 5, 2019

You’re welcome Nancy! Getting results is about finding what works for you. I’m sure others get amazing results with the WW program, but there are those that do not. But I’m confident that you will find what you are looking for with Noom. Wish you all the best with it. Please let us know how it goes.

Barbara Stewart - December 16, 2018

I just jumped on the Noom wagon today…

    Ralph - December 16, 2018

Congrats Barbara! I’m confident you will get amazing results.

Roberta brown - September 26, 2018

I don’t have a smart phone. Does iOS mean t ca be done on a iPad

    Ralph - September 28, 2018

Hi Roberta! IOS is just the operating system Apple uses for its mobile devices. So yes, you can also use your iPad for this program.

Tammie - August 23, 2018

I started Noom this week, so far I do like the program.

    Ralph - August 23, 2018

Hi Tammie! I’m really happy that you’re enjoying the program so far. I’m confident that you will get amazing results with it. I would really appreciate if you would come back and share with everyone your success if you don’t mind. Thanks for stopping by!

Judy - August 12, 2018

I have used WW on and off for years with success until freestyle. Do not care for “zero” points and had a great deal of difficulty losing weight. I join weight loss programs because I need the accountability and guidelines to keep me on track. “Zero” points was a foodie paradise

    Ralph - August 14, 2018

Hi Judy. Yea many WW users had an issue when the program changed to freestyle. I like how you mention accountability which is necessary for anyone trying to lose weight. Noom does a great job with that by assigning you a health coach to guide you. Are you a member of the Noom program? If so, how’s it going for you? Thanks for commenting.

Linda - May 27, 2018

my weekly Weight Watchers fee is more than $7.27 per week

    Ralph - May 28, 2018

Hi Linda! I see that WW has increased their price a bit for both the online and meetings package. I will make sure to adjust those prices in my article. Thanks for letting me know. How are you liking the program so far?
