  1. Hey, thanks for this great review – it saves me a bit of time sifting through their websites 🙂 It’s a pity Blue Apron doesn’t allow for specific dietary requirements; I would like to try them out, as I love their pro local farmers stance, but I’m trying to follow a zero sugar/gluten free diet. Do you know of other companies out there like them, but which have more dietary options?

    • Hi Erica! I’m glad you found my site helpful. To answer your question, off the top of my head, not sure there are many meal delivery services with such strict dietary options. But I will definitely research that more to find out.

  2. I feel like with fees like this: “$9.95 per serving per person. Also delivery is free for orders over $40 and $10 shipping charge for orders under $40.” you might as well go out to eat haha You can eat for around that much at a good number of places and don’t even have to cook anything. 🙂

    • Hi Kateryna! I totally agree that you could probably go out and eat and not worry about cooking, but the issue I have with that is you have no control over what ingredients are being put into the food you eat. Also like I mentioned, these types of services won’t be for everyone, but for some this could work. I appreciate your comment.

  3. Personally I feel that Blue Apron has cornered the market here. The graph at the bottom seems to indicate as much. I have not tried these delivery services, but I can certainly see the appeal. All you have to do is place your order, and it sounds like a really simple process to have a great, nutritious meal. It’s nice that you can try them for free. I may have to check it out.

    • You should definitely check them out. Also to clarify, they are not free to try, but you can try them risk free as there are no long term contracts. Blue apron is definitely a big player in the meal delivery business, but I think each service has their following. it’s just that blue apron has a very large following.

  4. Hey there, really interesting article and until I read this did not even realise that home cooked meals could be delivered, great idea! Out of interest, do these recipes and choices cater for special dietary requirements, e.g. GF or kosher? Perhaps that is a niche that is unexploited. Its one of the most frustrating things when going to a restaurant, Chris

    • Hey Chris! Unfortunately the food is not already cooked. Blue apron sends you the ingredients for you to cook the meal. Along with detailed instructions. Unfortunately Blue apron doesn’t offer specific dietary plans. I can definitely understand your frustration when it comes to dietary needs.

  5. OKay, I’m convinced to give this a try. I have heard both of these companies advertise on the radio, and until now I have never gone online looking to learn more about them.

But, as I write this I am waiting for the wife to get changed because she wants to go to the grocery store to get groceries for the week. . . I hate doing that.

After reading your comparison review I am going to give Blue Apron a try and see how it goes.

    • Hey TD! As long as the wife is cool with it. I wouldn’t want you getting in trouble with the wifey:) But they are definitely worth a try. Please let me know how you like it if you don’t mind.

  6. Hey Ralph,
Blue Apron seems like it will get my business. I have heard of one other delivery service but this one does not come close to either of these services. I am sure that the meals would be very easy to prepare. I am curious about ordering food online because I have not done it before. When I do I want it to be on time. I dislike waiting. If I put in an order today, how long would it take to be delivered to my house?

    • Hey Kendrick. I am also a person who doesn’t like to wait so much, but with either service, you receive a tracking number so you know when your package will arrive.

  7. Hi there RD, I found your article quite helpful, I did not even know that such a home cooked meal delivery service existed. Just gave me the idea to emulate the same concept in my own country. I will definitely want to find out more information. What about people with special allergies and vegetarians, do they have options for them too? Thanks

    • Hi Bala! Yea there are so many of these meal delivery services that are popping up everywhere. Not sure where you live, but sorry that they don’t have it available in your country. In regards to allergies, I know that blue apron has information on nutrition labels 3 weeks before shipping. But due to ingredients being shipped in the same box thus making it possible for ingredients to get in contact with each other, they recommend not ordering from blue apron if you are allergic to certain ingredients. I haven’t seen such info from home chef. Both services offer vegetarian options depending on which meal plan you select. I hope this answers your questions and thanks for commenting.

  8. I have seen both of these meal services advertised on TV, but have never looked into them. My wife and i enjoy cooking. Both of these plans, based on what you have written, seem to offer good meals at reasonable prices. I like the free shipping with Blue Apron despite the order size. With no commitment, is it possible to just one meal weekly? You have made it pretty easy to check both out. I am going to give Blue Apron a try first. Thanks for offering this comparison.

    • Hi Anastazja! The minimum order you can make is 3 recipes which serves 2 people. This equals out to six meals per week. So unfortunately you can’t just order one meal per week, but like mentioned, there are no commitments. So if you feel that blue apron is not worth the added weekly added expense, then you can cancel at anytime. So definitely worth a try.

  9. Hi dear
Personally I love cooking and I’m always ready to try out new recipe. It’s true that with all the instructions cooking will just be about following at the letter. My concern is that how will I know that what I get from following the instructions is what is was meant to be? I mean can they provide a sample of the cooked recipe so that I may know.
    Thanks

    • Hi Adyn and thanks for your comment! Most meal delivery services offer a picture so you have an idea of what you are cooking. As you follow the instructions given, you should be able to have an idea if you are headed in the right directions. I’m sure with your cooking skills, you will not be disappointed:)

  10. I have never used either of these before but have used similar meal delivery services.

Do both of these offer the chance to cook the meals from scratch or are they ready to eat meals?

What kind of recipes do you get with blue apron? Does it change every week?

    • Hi Craig! Both services send you the ingredients and provide you with easy to follow instructions to cook you meal from scratch. This is great for anyone who loves to cook. Even if you consider yourself a not so great cooker, with their easy to follow instructions, you can feel confident when preparing your meals. Every week you get a new selection of meals which is great!
