Think of it as a buyer’s guide to help make your home fitness gym a place where you no longer have to wait to use any fitness equipment.

Best Adjustable Dumbbells 2018 - Convenient, Versatile, and Effective

#1 Boflex SelectTech 552

If you’re familiar with the Boflex brand, then you know that you are getting quality when it comes to fitness equipment. It would be hard to argue against saying they are leader in making fitness equipment that are not only durable, but results oriented.

Just from looking at this particular product, you can already tell from the design that you’re dealing with a good quality dumbbell. My cousin has this same exact one, and I can tell you from experience that you will most definitely like the feel of it.

Although it is one of the best in the market, I wish the weight could go heavier than 52.5 pounds. Certain exercises like shrugs and dumbbell press, I could definitely go heavier than 52.5 pounds. But other than that, I have no issues with it.

If you really need the weight to go higher than 50 lbs, you could look at the Bowflex SelectTech 1090 which goes up to 90 pounds. But will cost you around $700 with the stand included. I wasn’t able to find the dumbbells without the stand.

But being able to switch in and out of a particular weight, makes getting through my exercise quick and easy. They also have the weight amount on the dial so you know exactly which weight amount you are selecting.

This leaves no confusion and allows you to get in and out of each exercise with ease. Also, for anyone that has an issue with price, the item has a stand as an option. But if you are looking to save like a hundred bucks, you could choose not to purchase the stand.

But for me personally, I like the fact that I could use the stand as it saves me a lot of pain from having to bend up and down to pick up the weight. But you really do have to factor in the cost of adding the stand with your purchase…Read Full Review

#2 PowerBlock Elite Dumbbells

Unlike the bowflex selecttech, instead of using a dial to adjust your weight, the powerblock uses a selector pin. You have to pull the selector pin out and choose the weight you want based on a color coded system that is labeled on the dumbbells.

When it comes to this particular product, I think many will like how perfect the powerblock fits in any corner of your room. Based on the it’s block design, you don’t have to worry about it sticking out like a sore thumb wherever you put it in the room.

When deciding to purchase a dumbbell set, one thing i’m always concerned with is the comfort of holding it. And with this particular item, there are some concerns for those with very big hands. You may have trouble getting your hand in and out to grab the handle.

You can purchase this product with or without the stand, but I do find that most people tend to purchase with the stand. Since it saves you a lot of time from having to bend up and down causing unnecessary stress on the back.

You can also purchase this with different max weights. You can either choose 50, 70, or 90 as a max weight, with different prices for each one. So depending on the amount of weight you plan on lifting, you may want to keep that in mind.

You also want to factor in the potential to get stronger. This would mean having to purchase a new set or an extension pack which a lot of these products have as an option.

There is also a 10 year warranty for the powerblock that is recommended for home use only. Which means that you should only be using these dumbbells in the home and not some gym where there tends to be a lot of wear and tear on the fitness equipment.

Not sure how they would find out, but this is definitely something to keep in mind. But knowing you have a 10 years on a warranty tells you about the quality of the product…Read Full Review

#3 Bowflex SelectTech 1090

As mentioned earlier, for those that love the boflex brand, but need heavier weight compared to the bowflex 552, you get just that with the 1090. You can adjust the weight to 90 pounds with ease.

This will cost you up to $700, but if you compare it to purchasing a whole rack of weights like at the gym, then you know you could expect to pay much more than that.

So it is definitely worth it you are someone that goes through a lot of different weight levels during your workout.

I have noticed people complaining about a design flaw in the 1090 compared to the 552. But a lot of those complaints deal with people possibly dropping the weights as you see people do at the gym.

My suggestion for anyone that is concerned about this is, don’t treat adjustable dumbbells  the same way you would treat the ones at the gym. Although adjustable dumbbells are considered durable, they are not as durable as commercial weights you see at the gym.

So please keep this in mind and treat your weights with care. This will ensure that you are able to enjoy your weights as long as you are active.

Also, these weights may be a bit more bulky compared to other dumbbells you may have experience with. Since this weight has an adjustable mechanism, it makes sense why it would seem bulkier than most.

It’s just something that you have to get used to and i’m sure it will no longer be an issue the more you use it.

If you’re looking to save some money, they also sell the bowflex 1090 as a single. So if you don’t mind doing single hand workouts, then that is definitely an option for you. It doesn’t come with a stand, but there is a plastic case holder for you to place it in…Read Full Review

#4 IronMaster Quick-Lock Adjustable Dumbbell

I know the name suggests that it’s a quick lock adjust system, but to be honest, I’ve seen quicker. Now this is not to say that the ironmaster dumbbell isn’t a good quality product, but I could definitely see this being an issue for those that like to work quickly through their workout.

Now unlike the bowflex and powerblock, there is a notable difference in how quickly you can interchange through different weight levels. Instead of turning a dial, there is a piece of metal that you need to slide out in order to change the desired weight.

Depending on who you are, it can take you anywhere from 10 seconds to 40 seconds to change the weights on both sides. So if you are someone that likes to do a lot of circuit exercises or drop sets, you will have quite a bit of trouble using these weights.

It has a steel design with chrome plated handles.  I wouldn’t consider it too bulky like the bowflex and powerblock, so this is great for anyone that is concerned about that.

There is also a stand that comes with the purchase of the ironmaster. One issue I find with the stand is when placing the weights on the platform. If you’ve ever finished completed an intense set, making sure you place the weights properly can be a tough task.

The stand is a bit small and doesn’t leave a lot of room for one to place the weights cleanly. So you may have to be a bit careful when looking to set the weights on the stand. Also, there is some space underneath the platform where you can place the extra weights.

It can be annoying having all that weight stored underneath, causing a lot of clutter. So this is definitely something to keep in mind when deciding on what to choose.

#5 PowerBlock Personal Trainer Set

If you are someone that is looking to add a little resistance to your workout, then the powerblock personal trainer set may be just what you’re looking for. If you’re looking to add on some major bulk, then you may need to look elsewhere as the max weight is 50 pounds.

Regardless, you should find this weight very useful if you are someone that is not a fan of the gym and prefer home workouts. With it’s easy to change weight system, you can quickly adjust the weight amount as you workout.

You may have bit of an issue if you are someone that has pretty large hands, as there isn’t a lot of room to get your hands to the handle. Getting used to the weights may also be something you may have to adjust to as well.

Since they are not your typical weights you find at the gym, getting a feel for the design of it may take some getting used to. But once you do, getting in a good workout should be quick and easy with its convenient selector pin.

Allowing you to quickly adjust the amount of weight you need to complete any exercise. Weight can be increased in increments of 2.5 pounds, allowing you to progress as you get stronger.

There is a stand that can be purchased separately for anyone that would rather not have to bend up and down to get the weights. Having a stand gives you that feel of being at the gym, minus all the germs and crowd of people that comes with it.

#6 Bayou Fitness Adjustable Dumbbell

If you’re looking for a good quality dumbbell that doesn’t have the brand name power like the bowflex, the bayou fitness dumbbell would be a good option. With it’s heavy duty chrome plated construction, you can expect these dumbbells to last quite a while.

The bayou dumbbell uses a selector pin to allow you to go in and out of your desired weight level very quickly. As we all know, this is key to making sure you have a very effective and efficient workout.

Although many prefer the dial knob that say a bowflex uses, the selector pin is just as good as efficient. All you have to do is lift the pin up and slide it left or right for the desired weight level.

The max weight it can go up to is 50 pounds, but also has another set you can buy that goes up to 25 pounds at a lower cost. Unfortunately there are no sets that go above the 50, so this may be an issue for anyone looking for much heavier weight.

When looking to increase or decrease weight, one issue many have is the 10 pound increment amount. This can be an issue as most people like to increase or decrease their weight between 2.5 and 5 pounds.

There is one way you can get around this, but is not recommended by the manufacturer. You can increase one end of the weight and leave the other weight the same. This will create an imbalance leaving you with a very awkward feeling as you lift the weight.

You really want to be careful when trying to attempt this as this can be very dangerous for those that are not careful. So if there was one negative, it would definitely be that. Other than that, the dumbbell works great and is very useful.

Also for anyone looking for a stand to put the weights, unfortunately there is none available for this particular product. There is however a storage tray that you would have to bend up and down in order to place it.

#7 Starring Adjustable Dumbbells

For anyone that is on a budget and is looking for durable dumbbells without the fancy adjustable features, then you may want to look at starring dumbbells. With its chrome iron material, you can expect them to last a very long time.

The starring dumbbells use a collar where you have to spin it on and off in order to change the weights. Now obviously this method is not as quick as the dial or a selector pin, but it still gets the job done.

But if time isn’t an issue for you, then you will definitely find these weights very useful.

I would caution that you make sure that the collars are on tight as they do tend to get loose from time to time. This can cause the weights to make noise as you workout which could be a bit annoying. So definitely make sure it is secured as you exercise.

I think the great thing about dumbbells that use a collar instead of a dial mechanism is the amount of weight that can be added. As long as you have the available weights, you can add as much weight the bar will allow you to put on it.

And in this case, you can add up to 100 pounds of weight which is great for you heavy lifters out there. And unlike dumbbells like the bowflex and powerblock, you can treat these weights as you would weights at the gym and not worry about serious damage.

Also the starring allows you a lot of flexibility when it comes to how much you would like to increase the weights during sets. They have listed the increment amount at 5, but clearly it varies depending on what you prefer.

If you’re wondering if there is a weight stand that comes with the dumbbells, I will tell you that there isn’t. This is however an optional safety tray that you may want to verify with the seller that it comes with your purchase.

#8 XMark Adjustable Dumbbell

I will admit that when looking at the XMark dumbbell, it is definitely a nice set of weights. It has a very cool design that can be rivaled with most high end dumbbells. With its heavy duty chrome construction, I don’t have to worry too much about durability.

The xmark uses a slide knob that allows you to adjust your weight level with somewhat ease. The reason I say somewhat is that compared to say the bowflex, the slide knob isn’t as smooth as the dial, but still gets the job done.

The max weight for the xmark is 50 lbs which can be an issue for the heavy lifters out there. Also, it only allows you to go in increments of 10 pounds. So if you’re looking to do supersets or circuit training, you may run into some issues.

They also have available a set of weights that max out to 25 pounds. So anyone that isn’t really looking to bulk up, but rather stay active with resistance training, there is that option.

One thing I do like about about the xmark is the handle, that allows for a very secure grip. Which allows you to focus on the workout rather than worrying about the weight falling on your head due to a slippery grip.

Also, not sure how important having a stand is to you, but there are no stands that come with these dumbbells. Instead you get a storage tray that you can lay the weights down on when you are done with a set or workout.

Some have complained about having issues with the weight sliding in perfect on the tray. So that is something you may have to be aware of as you go through your sets.

#9 MTN Gearsmith Cast Iron Chrome Dumbbell Set

When I look at the MTN Gearsmith dumbbell set, the first thing that comes to mind is concrete flooring and me pumping weights in the basement. Now i’m not sure if this is your intentions, but these weights seem perfect for that type of setting.

Or if you rather picture yourself in your comfy home gym getting in a good workout, that will do just fine. Regardless of the setting, these weights are great for both the home or commercial setting.

With this brand, there are different sets that max out to either 52.5, 100, or 200 pounds of total weight.

So depending on if you are looking for light weights to stay active, or consider yourself a heavy lifter looking to bulk up, there are different options for you to choose.

The dumbbells use a spin collar that you can spin off to add on your weights. If you’re workout routine consists of drop sets and circuit style training, you may find it difficult going in and out of each set or exercise.

If time really isn’t an issue for you and you’re just looking to get in a good workout, then this dumbbell will work just fine. The increment amount you can use to add or subtract weight varies depending on the available weights.

But you can expect amounts anywhere from 2.5 to 10 pounds, which makes progressing through each workout more convenient.

You should also be aware that this product does not come with either a weight stand or a storage tray. So if you have hardwood floors or tile, you may want to think about getting something to put under the weights to avoid any floor damage.

#10 Omni Adjustable Dumbbells

Not the most attractive looking dumbbell set you will ever see, but if you’re looking for simple weights to keep you active, then you can’t go wrong with the omni. When it comes to simplicity, nothing is more simpler than these adjustable dumbbells.

These are the types of weights you have in your home for days where you don’t feel like going to the gym. You can do a variety of exercises with these weights along with other home fitness equipment you may have to workout with.

Keep in mind that the max weight is 22.5 pound for each dumbbell, so you shouldn’t expect to get massive gains with this set. These would be perfect for anyone that may be just looking to maintain their current fitness level.

This weight uses iron collars that allow you to adjust the weight the way you like. Since the max amount goes up to 22.5, you shouldn’t expect to have too much weight laying around the house. But you can increase it in increments of 2.5 pounds.

You can expect to do exercises like arm curls, shoulder presses, and maybe tricep extensions. Since those are considered smaller muscles, you will more than likely see better results depending on your strength level.

There are no weight stands available for this product so you may have to purchase a separate storage tray to lay underneath the weights.

When reviewing the overall performance when it comes to the omni, if you’re expecting something fancy, you may have to lower your expectations a bit. This weight is primarily for anyone that is just looking for something to get the job done.

For anyone that is wondering about the warranty of this product, there is a 5 year warranty on the weight plates and parts. I doubt you should have any serious issues with the durability of the dumbbell, but it is good to know there is one.

#11 Cap Barbell Dumbbell Set

If you’re new to exercise and are looking for cheap fitness equipment to get started with, the cap dumbbells are a good place to start. This is a good piece of equipment to start off with and build into something more advanced as you gain more experience.

One thing to be aware of before purchasing, the set is listed on amazon as weighing 40 pounds. 1. That is the total weight of both dumbbells together and 2. Many have complained that it doesn’t even equal that amount.

Many have stated that it actually weighs a total of 37.5 pounds, with the bar weighing 5 pounds each. Not sure why they are advertising it as such, but it is something you should be aware of so you are not surprised when purchasing.

Regardless of the weight, it is still a good piece of equipment that can cover many of your fitness needs as a beginner. It has enough resistance for exercises like arm curls, light chest press or shoulder press.

The weights use a spin lock collar that allows you to adjust the weight amount to your liking. It can be adjusted in increments of 2.5 – 5 pounds as you increase in strength.

Although the plan may be to upgrade your weights as you get stronger, but it is good to know that these sets of weight are built to last. So not having to worry about them getting damaged from the wear and tear is a great thing.

Although there is no weight stand, you do get a carrying case to place all your pieces in just in case you’re travelling somewhere. You will however, have to worry about having to bend up and down to use the weight, which can be annoying for many.

#12 Yes4All Adjustable Dumbbells

If you’re someone that is into heavy lifting, but is not a huge fan of the gym, then you may see a lot of value with the yes4all adjustable dumbbell. A big reason for that is you can get the total weight for each dumbbell up to 100 pounds.

This is a great thing for those that are looking to add some serious muscle mass. The one thing I would caution is the star lock collars that attach at the ends of each bar.

The collars have a tendency to loosen which can cause the weights to shake and make noise. So I would suggest checking to make sure that collar is locked on tight to help prevent any potential injuries.

There are 6 different sets of dumbbells that are available. Each having different maximum weight levels. Depending on which set you purchase, you will notice that there are quite a bit of weight plates that come with it.

Each with incremental amounts anywhere from 1.5 pounds to 10 pounds. Some may have issue with the amount of clutter that will come with all those weight plates, but this is what you should expect if you have a home fitness gym.

There are no weight stands that come with the dumbbells, so you should expect to have to bend up and down to use the weights. You can purchase a separate stand, but you would have to look around for one that the weights could fit perfectly on.

There is also a 5 year warranty on the weight plates and parts. Although I doubt you will have to worry about that since they are pretty durable and can withstand the usual wear and tear.

#13 Unipack Adjustable Dumbbells

The unipack adjustable dumbbells are a great value for anyone that is just looking for some simple weights to workout with. Whether you are a heavy lifter or a beginner, you will be able to find many ways to get the results you are looking for.

The set is primarily designed to hold up to 100 pounds on each bar, but there have been others that have been able to add more. So this is something to keep in mind for those that are looking to bulk up with heavier weight.

There are star lock collars which hold the weights in place, but from my experience, you always want to be careful after every use. The locks have a tendency to get loose and you can tell by hearing it shake.

So it is always a good thing to make sure to check that it is secured after every set is performed. This is usually one negative when dealing with star locked collars. But if you don’t mind the occasional check, you should have no reason to enjoy using these weights.

The weights can be increased in increments of 2.5 pounds, which gives anyone the option to progress at a comfortable pace.

Some have complained that the bars can be too long to do such exercises like bicep curls, but many consider this a minor issue.

#14 Proform Adjustable Dumbbell Set

If you’re familiar with the proform brand, then you know they are known for their popular proform treadmills. They are also known for making things like exercise bikes, elliptical machines, weight benches and more.

So when it comes to quality, you know that’s exactly what you are getting with their adjustable dumbbell set.

Depending on what your fitness goals are, you shouldn’t expect to use these set of weights to build serious muscle mass. The reasoning for that is that their max weight is only 25 pounds total.

So these set of weights are designed for those that are looking for a way to stay active and need a pair of dumbbells to maintain their active lifestyle. You should expect to use these types of weight primarily for the home.

The proform dumbbell uses a selector pin to allow you to adjust the weights to your preferred level. You should find sliding the pin back and forth pretty easy and quick as you go through your workout.

You can also increase your weight level in increments of 2.5 pounds, allowing you for easy progression as you increase in strength.

For those that are wondering if there is a weight stand that comes with the proform dumbbell set, unfortunately there is not. There is however a storage tray that is included with your purchase of the set, which can be helpful when storing it in your home.

Overall, you should find these dumbbells very comfortable to use as the bars allow for easy handling. The bars are made with a rubber grip, and the plates are designed with chrome steel, giving the dumbbells a very nice look while you’re working out.

#15 Weider Speed Weight Adjustable Dumbbells

If you’re looking for very simple weights and lack of brand power isn’t an issue for you, then the weider speed weight dumbbells may be perfect for you. It has a very modern design and a advance adjustment mechanism, without the heavy price tag.

These weights are perfect for anyone with a home fitness gym that is just looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle. You can perform simple exercises like the shoulder press, arm curl, tricep extensions, etc.

You don’t have to worry about having weights all over the floors of your home as the weight level can be adjusted with a simple selector pin. You can increase the weight level in increments of 2.5 pounds which will allow you to go at your own pace.

There have been complaints about the weights being a bit shaky when you use them. Some have even mentioned the weights falling. So this is something you definitely want to be aware of before making a decision to purchase them.

The weights do come with a storage tray for you to place each dumbbell in. This will allow you to easily place your weights in a corner or under the bed after a workout.

If anyone is wondering what the warranty is on the weights, unfortunately you will have to contact the seller to find out. Not sure why this information isn’t made available on the listing, but at least you are aware of it.

Things To Consider When Choosing Your Dumbbell Set

Ease of Use – a big reason for even thinking about purchasing adjustable dumbbells, is convenience. Knowing you don’t have to wait to use a piece of equipment like you would at a gym is key.

So being able to quickly adjust your weight settings is going to be important if you plan on having an effective workout. If time is a priority for you, I would suggest a dumbbell that uses a dial turn system to adjust the weight.

Safety – this should always be priority number one when dealing with any type of fitness equipment. Making sure you choose a dumbbell that is both sturdy and durable is crucial to having an injury free workout.

I understand cost being a factor in your decision, but it may be worth it to spend a few bucks to ensure your safety each time you workout.

Weight Variety – let’s be honest, the whole point of getting adjustable dumbbells is change the weight amount whenever you please.

Instead of having to buy multiple sets of dumbbells you would see at the gym, you can have one piece of equipment that allows you to do the same.

So depending on your fitness goals, having your share of choices when it comes to weight level will allow you to progress through your workouts with ease.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, your choice for which dumbbell set is right for you comes down to a few things:

  • The amount of weight needed to satisfy your fitness needs.
  • The speed in which you need to get in and out of certain weight levels.
  • The comfort you feel when using a particular weight.
  • The durability of such equipment.

It is important to note these things since cost will be factor.

What makes dumbbells that have multiple weight levels so popular, is that they save you time and money from having to buy multiple dumbbells like gyms do.

So even though you may worry about the cost of let’s say the bowflex, think about how much money you actually save from having to buy multiple sets of different weights.

You don’t want to find yourself having to buy another set of weights because you’re getting too strong for the ones you have.

So I hope you were able to find this guide about the best adjustable dumbbells in 2017 useful. If you have any questions, please feel free to share in the comment section below.

Questions ensure that everyone has a better understanding of what is necessary for their fitness needs.
