When it comes to losing weight, sometimes diet and exercise just isn’t enough. Some people need that extra guidance whether it be from a specialist or a group of people going through the same struggle.
Weight loss programs are a great way to get this type of guidance and hopefully reach your goal of healthy living.
Two of the more popular programs many look to are Mayo Clinic Diet vs Weight Watchers. Both have a great system in place to help those that struggle with weight loss and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
So maybe you’re trying to figure out which program will help you finally get the results you’re looking for.
We know that the goal for both programs is to help you lose weight, but what separates the two? As you continue to read, I plan on answering that question.

With the weight watchers program, each food item is assigned “SmartPoints” which can make calorie counting super easy for users.
Basically healthy foods will have a lower number than unhealthy foods. So it’s important to keep your number as low as possible with this system.
It’s also important to note that weight watchers has implemented a new program called the freestyle program where some foods are worth zero points.
Many have complained about this new system as it has caused them to gain more weight. There’s a reason for this in which I will explain in further detail in my quick review.
For now, its important to understand that each program uses a different approach in how they count calories for user.
Mayo Clinic – the great thing about the mayo clinic diet is that you are part of a system that was created by medical experts. As a member you get access to these professionals all from your phone.
They provide you with newsletters with healthy tips and advice. Pretty much all the support you get will be through their online platform.
So for those that are looking for an actual voice to help guide them through their weight loss journey, you may not find that with this program.
Weight Watchers – when it comes to support, the weight watchers program provides a good amount of it. They provide you with 24/7 online chat along with access to their community of other members looking to lose weight.
And if you feel you need a more personal touch where actual conversation is happening, there are also weekly group meetings for you to go to. Of course access to this is dependent on which membership you choose. Something I will be going over soon.
Advantage – Weight Watchers
Mayo Clinic – because this program uses the food pyramid as a guide as to what you should be eating, you get to choose what you want to eat. Just make sure they are healthy choices of course.
Making sure your diet is well balanced will be key to you getting the best results. But if for some reason you don’t find yourself eating all the foods suggested, it’s ok as long as they are healthy.
Weight Watchers – this program uses points as a guide for how you choose your meals. The healthier the food item, the lower the points that are towards your smartpoints goal.
With their system, you are allowed the flexibility to eat what you like, but it’s up to you make sure you hit your points goal.
So it’s almost like a budget system where you’re in charge of how you manage it. So if you’re looking to eat unhealthy, just know that there is a price to pay for it.
Advantage – Tie
Mayo Clinic – as i mentioned earlier, most of what you will be doing with this weight loss program will be online using your phone or computer. The Mayo Clinic uses a habit tracker to help you keep track of both your diet and exercise.
This habit tracker is managed through your cell phone where you will be recording everything you eat and do. You can also get access to detailed information to help you stay up-to-date with important weight loss information.
When it comes to meal and fitness plans, you get access to a variety of recipes, portion control guides, personalized workouts and fitness tips. All of this will help make sure you are doing the right things to get the best results.
Weight Watchers – there are 3 different options for you to choose when it comes to your weight loss needs. They have an online, meetings, and coaching options that give you access to different things.
For those that choose just the online option, you can track everything from the food you eat to the type of activities you perform throughout the day.
If you feel the need to meet others and discuss how you’re progressing with the program, the meeting option allows you to attend live group meetings.
For those that prefer 1 on 1 coaching, you can choose this option as well. Whichever method you feel will best help you be successful with your weight loss is totally up to you.

Mayo Clinic – when signing up to the program, you get full access to everything the mayo clinic program has to offer. It is a 13 week subscription where you will be charged $52 for the quarter.
This covers the 13 weeks and comes out to about $4 per week. Do keep in mind that your subscription auto renews, so if you need to cancel your subscription, do it before your current subscription period is up.
Weight Watchers – this program offers three different packages:
Depending on which option you choose, you will have access to certain parts of their weight loss program. So you can expect to pay anywhere from $12 – $50 per month.
The good thing about this program is that it is month to month. So you can pretty much cancel at anytime once that month is over.
Advantage – Tie
Most people would tell you that they know they need to eat healthier and exercise more, but the problem is knowing how to go about it.
Think about it, access to the gym and healthy foods is readily available to anyone who needs it, and yet many still struggle with being overweight.
The mayo clinic diet starts you off with a 2 week jump start plan called the “Lose It” phase. This phase is designed to help you safely lose 6-10 pounds in first 14 days of starting the program.
I’m usually cautious when it comes to any program claiming they can help you lose x amount of weight in a short period of time.
But the goal during this phase is to help you learn how to develop good habits, and break the bad habits that you struggle with on a daily basis. Which is very important if you plan on having long term success with this.
When you’re done with this phase, you can move on to phase 2, which is call The “Live It” phase. Where the goal is to have you lose 1-2 pounds each week, which is considered a healthy way to lose weight.

Meaning, in order to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume. More importantly, losing this weight in a healthy way that sticks long term.
So below I plan on breaking down this diet plan so you have a better idea of how it works, and if it will be something that can work for you.
It’s a weight loss program that is designed to help you lose weight in a healthy and effective way. With the help of medical experts that understand what it really takes to lose weight but in a safe way.
It’s not meant to be some quick fix fad diet where more than likely you will end up frustrated and angry.
Their goal is to help you create better habits when it comes to your diet and exercise. By providing you with tools that will guide you into a healthier lifestyle.

The mayo clinic references 15 key habits which are considered essential to you losing weight during the first 14 days, and also going forward.
Habits like getting good sleep, portion control, physical activity…etc. learning how to manage such habits will train your mind to make better lifestyle choices.
Also by utilizing a habit tracker, you will be asked to keep track of all your daily habits and mark them off as you go about your day. You also get a progress report where you will record all the task you’ve completed or not.
This is a great way to learn about what habits you’re weak in and can work towards learning how to improve on them.
During this phase, what kind of foods can you eat?
I’m sure you’re familiar with the food pyramid right? As children we learn about which foods are good for us and those that are not.
Well when it comes to this diet plan, you can expect the same kind of information to be provided. Which is great since it’s a simple and easy way to organize your eating habits.
The goal of course is to stick to foods more at the base of the pyramid and less from the top of it. And if you do find yourself consuming foods from the top, just make sure to keep it small.
You are also given a calorie chart that uses your current weight as a starting point for how much calories you should be consuming. After the 2 weeks are up, you will learn more about calories goals and what you should be eating.

You want to be able to receive and jump right into your workout. The great thing about the concept2 is that it comes with easy installation with only 8 screws needing to be adjusted.
Waterrower – although not extremely difficult, the waterrower does come in pieces which may make it difficult for those that don’t consider themselves very handy.
Many have mentioned that putting it together is doable, but if assembly is one of your sticking points for choosing which machine to go with, the waterrower may be at a disadvantage.

Concept2 – the machine can be separated into two pieces allowing for easy storage. And with its framelock mechanism, there are no tools needed to separate the machine. It also comes with wheels allowing for easy mobility when storing.
And for those that don’t feel like wasting time breaking apart the machine for storing, it can also be stood upright as well. Along with the wheels to reduce any strain when moving.
Waterrower – unfortunately this machine doesn’t allow you to break it apart, but you are able to stand the machine upright.
This will ensure that it takes up minimal space within your home. There are also wheels at the bottom when in upright mode, allowing for easy mobility throughout your home.

Which Dumbbell Set Gets You The Best Results?
For those that go to the gym, having access to a variety of equipment makes getting in shape really convenient. But for those that have their own home gym, trying to match all that equipment can get both clunky and expensive.
One piece of equipment in particular are dumbbells. I’m sure we can all agree that there is no need for multiple dumbbells in your home. Which is what makes adjustable dumbbells so popular.
Powerblock vs Bowflex Dumbbells…
…two of the most popular sets of adjustable dumbbells on the market today. But which one will provide for you the convenience that is needed when it comes to working out at home?
Below I will be breaking down what separates the two dumbbells, and which one would be best for your fitness needs.
Because there are various models for both dumbbell brands, in my comparisons going forward, I will be discussing two of the more popular dumbbells from each brand.
That would be the Powerblock Elite and the Bowflex Selecttech 552. Although there’s little difference in other models from these brands, it does help with any confusion when going through my comparisons.
One of the main purposes of adjustable dumbbells is convenience. Being able to quickly get through a set of exercises makes your workout both quick and effective.
So when comparing both of these dumbbells, one of the main differences many users will notice is the method in which you can adjust the weight amount.
With many of the powerblock dumbbells, you will notice they use a selector pin. By pulling the pin out, you can adjust the weight amount quickly. Saving you a lot of time when performing a particular exercise.
With any bowflex dumbbell set, they use a dial system with the weight amount labeled on the side of it. Many will find the dial very efficient when it comes to changing the weight amount.
Powerblock Elite – this adjustable dumbbell set uses a selector that allows you to quickly adjust your weight amount as you workout. There’s also a color coded panel where you can identify which weight amount you want. All you have to do is pull the pin out, and quickly place it in the open slot that matches the color coded weight panel.
Bowflex Selecttech – uses a dial which are placed on both sides of the dumbbells allowing you to quickly adjust the weight amount. The dials also has numbers with the weight amount so you’re able to quickly identify the amount of weight you need to workout with. So with basically just a turn of the dial, getting through each set has never been easier.
Advantage – Bowflex
Powerblock Elite – has a block like design which gives you a more compact lift when working out. Also, because of its flat ends, it can easily be placed on your legs before lifting off.
Many have complained about not being able to fit their hands to reach the handles. So if you’re someone with large hands, you may find that part a bit annoying.
Bowflex Selecttech – looks like your standard dumbbells you find at the gym especially when it comes to holding it. But the very wide base can feel a bit awkward when in the lifting motion.
Doesn’t place on the legs as easily as you would like, but well enough to get through a workout. Not a big concern, but some may find it a bit annoying when getting ready to lift off.
Advantage – Tie
Powerblock Elite – the maximum weight for this particular dumbbell is 50 pounds, but there is an expansion pack that allows you to increase it to 50-70 lbs.
However I have heard that the expansion pack can get stuck at times which could be an inconvenience to your workout.
The powerblock also has a 90 pound set of dumbbells that you could purchase for a couple of hundred bucks more. So if you’re a heavy lifter and are looking for massive gains, that option is available.
Bowflex – this particular set of dumbbells has a maximum weight of 52.5 pounds, and doesn’t have any expansion pack to increase the weight.
The bowflex does have the 1090 model that has a maximum weight of 90 pounds, but it only comes as a single. Each dumbbell costs about $250, so you can expect to pay at least $500 to get a pair.
When looking at the prices of getting a pair for both dumbbells, the bowflex was cheaper. But if you chose to go with the expansion kit for the powerblock, you would be saving more money.

When you think about dumbbells, you usually expect it to be handlebars with rounded plates attached at both ends. But with the powerblock elite, instead of round plates, you get squared plates.
Although different, it does make placing them on your legs before liftoff a bit easier. This set of dumbbells uses a selector pin to allow you to quickly adjust the weights to your liking.
Each weighted plate is color coded so you know exactly which weight amount you want. The one issue some may have is fitting your hands where the handlebar is located. This will be an issue especially for those with larger sized hands.

When it comes to fitness equipment, bowflex has the name to backup the quality that comes with it. So you know exactly what you are getting when adding it to your fitness arsenal.
So when it comes to their adjustable dumbbells, you are getting hardcore equipment with simplicity in mind. With its dial system, you can quickly adjust the weight amount to your preferred setting.
Not only that, but you’re getting a durable piece of equipment that you should expect to last a while. If there was one issue I had with bowflex, it would be the maximum weight amount. The 552 model can only go up to 52.5 pounds.
So for those that like to lift really heavy, this would not be enough to satisfy your workout. You would then have to go with the selecttech 1090 model which has a maximum of 90 pounds. The only issue is that it comes as a single.

Personally for me, when I think about fitness equipment, the first thing that comes to mind is bowflex. Not only do they have the brand name, but being able to change the weight amount with just the turn of a dial screams convenience.
Both dumbbells are good quality and will provide you with the necessary resistance to help you build nice lean muscles.
If you’re deciding factor is which dumbbell set allows you to adjust the weight quicker, then I would have to go with the bowflex. Turning a dial is much easier to do than having to pull out a pin and place it in the necessary slot.

What makes fitness so interesting is the fact that there are so many ways to get in shape. Whether you’re into cardio training or weight training, there are many ways to go about it.
But in this article, I will be talking about cardio training. In particular…bike riding. If you’ve ever ridden a bike before, then you know how liberating a feeling it can be.
When it comes to exercise, stationary bikes are a very popular way to burn calories to help you lose weight. It’s important however to know there are two different types of bikes.
Recumbent bikes vs Upright bikes. Although they have the same function, both offer a very different feel and comfort level for those that love to cycle.
This will be important to understand especially for those that suffer with lower back pain. Age and height are also other factors that you may want to consider before deciding which type of bike will be best for your fitness needs.
Also to avoid confusion, spins bikes are also considered upright bikes as well. This comparison is based on your body position while riding an exercise bike.
Probably the biggest difference between a recumbent bike and an upright bike is the body position you’re in while riding.
With a recumbent bike, the body is in more of a laid back position allowing you to do multi-task a bit while exercising. One of the more popular things to do while using a recumbent bike is reading.
