With so many people trying to lose weight, many are looking to diets to help get them results. In particular, low carb diets.
This makes sense since carbs contain a lot of calories, and in order to lose weight, you must burn more calories than you consume.
But before you decide to jump on the next fad diet, there are some things you need to know about low carb diets.
Because when it comes to your health, it’s important to have an understanding of what makes the body function at optimal levels.
And if you’re not careful, a diet where you reduce your carb intake could do more harm than good for your weight loss goals.
Below I have listed some very important things you should know before starting any low carb diet.
I plan on also recommending a weight loss program for those looking for a healthy way to lose weight. So definitely stay tuned for that.
So let’s start with the first thing you should know about low carb diets.
Low Carb Diets Aren’t Sustainable
Like with any diet that is being sold to the public, there’s always an end date. Whether it’s six weeks or 6 months, you know eventually this diet will come to an end.
But one thing that doesn’t have an end date is the maintenance needed to keep all the weight you lost off for good. It takes constant work to not only make sure you take the weight off, but also make sure it never comes back.
Knowing this, do you think you can stick to a low carb diet program for the long term?
If not, then wouldn’t it make more sense to create a lifestyle based on healthy eating habits. Because like most fad diets, they are pretty much quick fixes that leave you feeling frustrated rather than feeling good.
Low Carb Diets Aren’t For Everyone
Just because you found that one person had success with a low carb diet, doesn’t been you will too. Everyone reacts differently to the foods they put into their body, and it’s important to understand that.
Especially when you find so many diets out there that claim reducing the amount of carbs you consume is the solution to weight loss. If you’re not getting results with this diet, there’s usually a variety of reasons for that.
What bothers me are those that swear by low carb diets say the reason you’re probably not finding success with it is because you’re doing it wrong.
So if you’re someone that has tried it and have found little success, try not to get too discouraged. You just need to learn more about your body and how it reacts to the type of foods you put into it.
Low Carb Diets Kill Your Energy Levels
If you’re unaware of it by now, carbs are a great source of energy. They provide your body with the glucose needed to help you perform daily functions throughout the day.
So if you’re someone that tends to feel tired even after a good night sleep, you may not be feeding your body enough carbs.
Of course if you are someone that suffers from diabetes, then it’s important to manage the amount of carbs you consume throughout the day. It is also recommend you consult with your doctor as well.
Too many times I have spoken to those claiming to be on low carb diets, and they talk about how tired they are. We can all agree, it’s very difficult to be productive in whatever you do when you’re tired.
So if your diet is making you tired, what’s the point of taking it. Last time I checked, the more tired you are, the less active you will be. Which leads me to the next important thing you should know about low carb diets.
Low Carb Diets Can Cause You To Be Less Active
A big reason carbs get such a bad rap, is due to the fact that many high carb foods have a lot of calories. And in order to lose weight, you have to reduce the amount of calories you consume throughout the day.
But this is only true if you are someone that considers themselves to be very inactive. Since losing weight is about burning more calories than you consume, if you’re not being active, then you aren’t burning enough calories.
This can give you the excuse to not want to exercise and put in the effort to improve your overall health. Youf hope is that if you reduce the amount of carbs/calories you consume during the day, you will eventually lose weight.
Although there may be some weight loss initially, you will eventually plateau. Causing you to wonder why you’re still not happy with what you’re seeing in the mirror everyday.

Low Carb Diets Isn’t Always Considered Healthy Eating
There are three very important nutrients your body needs in order to function properly:
Assuming you’re consuming the healthy type of nutrients, these three are necessary for your body to function effectively.
Of course the amount of each nutrient needed to be consumed is dependent on factors like weight, height, and gender.
But when I hear about low carb diets, i think about some of the important nutrients that may be missing from a healthy diet.
Also, if you’re taking in less carbs, then that means you will have to consume more fats and protein. This can cause you to eat more unhealthy foods to make up for the loss in carbs.
Of course if you manage it correctly and have the discipline to make sure you’re still eating healthy fats and protein, it’s possible to get away with reducing your carb intake.
But more than likely, the reason you’re in your current situation is because you lack the necessary discipline to get the results you’re looking for.
Low Carb Diets Can Increase Your Cravings
You always hear people say consume things in moderation. So when you deprive yourself of things you like, this will only increase your cravings for it. Thus you will find yourself consuming unhealthy foods more often.
This is especially true when it comes to your carbs, which is a very important nutrient. So by consuming less carbs daily, you will be just fueling the cravings for those carbs. Leaving you more vulnerable to eating processed carbs which is always a poor option.
Low Carb Diets Can Cause a Variety of Health Effects
According to a mayo clinic study, drastically cutting carbs can leave you vulnerable to certain health effects. Some of those effects include:
- Muscle cramps
- Constipation and diarrhea
A big reason for this can be due to the lack of nutrients that goes with partaking in a low carb diet. Remember, carbs is considered one of three very important nutrients for proper body function.
Removing one of those nutrients can put you body in risk of functioning improperly. Also, if you’re reducing your carbs, more than likely your consuming foods that are either high in fat and protein.
Which means you’re probably eating more meat which can increase risk of heart disease, and foods that are high in saturated fat. So it’s important to make sure you are consuming healthy fats and proteins.
How Effective are Low Carb Diets for Weight Loss?
If I haven’t stated it enough times already, then let me say it again. If you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight.
What is the best way to burn those calories?
By being active. How do you get active? With exercise. Instead of trying to reduce the amount of food you eat, try increasing the amount of activity you put your body through on a daily basis.
Will this require having energy? You bet it does. And the best way to provide your body with that energy is with carbs…healthy carbs of course.
Look, I understand that life can get in the way of trying to live a healthy life, but think about how rewarding it would be to finally reach your fitness goals.
All you need is an hour a day to exercise, and you won’t have to rely on diets that can do more harm to your health than good.
